Oh, and the point buy is 20 compared to the companions which spread from like low 25 to 30something. Other than that you're not missing out on anything. And if you use Bag of Tricks or a save editor you can change the point buy.

Player is freely able to choose mercenaries over story companions, like in Varnhold. Though a reasonable limit should be preserved. Ie. if you can only have 3 story companions, you should get to hire 3 mercenaries. Again like in Varnhold. Custom companions could have some sort of behaviour pattern based on alignment.
